Friday, 3 July - Marion @ Sikeston W 1-0
The Sikeston Bulls and Marion Bobcats battled all nine innings until the very end tonight. Both teams were scoreless into the bottom of the ninth when Kody Campbell started things off by smashing a double into right center field. Designated hitter Joe Meggs sacrificed to move pinch runner Jeremy Gum over to third. The Bobcats then decided to intentionally walk Koby Kraemer. That brought center fielder Blake Slattery to the plate. He proceeded to smash a single right up the middle to score Gum from third and allow the Bulls to win the game 1-0. Starting Bulls pitcher Lance Young went all nine strong innings for the win allowing only 3 Bobcat hits, striking out 6 and walking 3 batters. The Sikeston defense had several highlights tonight, one being in the 7th inning when Bobcat leadoff batter Mitch McClay was thrown out when his grounder was nabbed by Bulls shortstop Jordan Kimball and he fired it to first for the out. Things got interesting in the 8th when Marion got the bases loaded due to a single, a throwing error and a walk. With 2 outs Mitch McKay was again at the plate when he hit a looper that looked to be a hit over the first baseman. But Bulls Kody Campbell reached as high as he could to catch the ball and keep the Bobcats from scoring. The Bulls only managed 5 hits against the strong pitching of Bobcat Ryan Rogers. Campbell got a single along with that double, Jordan Kimball got a single, and Slattery posted another single in the 5th inning. Rogers struck out 11 Bulls batters and pitched around 5 walks. Jason Long pitched the 8th and 9th for the Bobcats, striking out 2 batters and walking one and takes the loss. Drew Barrett went 2 for 4 for the Bobcats with 2 singles. This brought second baseman Brian Gose to the plate where he blasted a shot out to center field that reached the fence. Gose was thrown out trying to reach third but not before those 3 Bulls runners scored bringing the score to 6-2. In the seventh Pirate Lanc Crochet reached on an error and Cass Via doubled. Marion's first home run of the 2009 season came early off the bat of designated hitter Drew Williams to give the Bobcats an early lead, but a grand slam off Bobcat reliever Jason Long by Bulls slugger Kody Campbell sent Marion to its league-high 10th loss of the season. Starter Ryan Rogers pitched well enough to win for Marion in five innings of work, leaving with a 5-3 lead, but the bullpen fell apart in the seventh, allowing five runs off relievers Paul Chiampa and Long.
